Overview
When I first began the search for a service dog, I knew I needed more than just a companion; I needed a partner who could be a reliable support in my daily life. After exploring various options, my journey led me to Coastline K9, a renowned dog training facility in Naples, Florida. Pre-Delivery
Initial Contact and Decision-Making
I first heard about Coastline K9 while visiting another company in Dallas, TX. Although I was impressed with that company, a family friend recommended that I also look into Coastline K9 as another option. Intrigued, I reached out to them, and the team promptly responded. Erick, the owner, was on a delivery in Wyoming at the time, but he scheduled a call with me the very next day.
From the beginning, Erick’s professional background stood out. A former Army Ranger with five tours, including two as a Canine handler, Erick had an impressive resume that immediately gave me confidence in his capabilities. Coastline K9’s facilities were equally remarkable, with large indoor and outdoor training spaces set on a beautifully maintained property in Naples.
The initial inquiry process was smooth and informative. I filled out a form on their website and was soon contacted via text to schedule a call. During our 90-minute conversation, Erick patiently answered all my questions, discussed my needs, and recommended a Dutch Shepherd or Belgian Malinois, both of which were new breeds to me. His in-depth knowledge and thoughtful approach made a strong impression, and I knew I was in good hands.
The Pre-Purchase Process
The support provided by Coastline K9 during the pre-purchase phase was exceptional. They answered every text, call, and question, and even invited us for an in-person visit to meet the team and some of the dogs. Erick’s thorough explanations and genuine care for our needs reassured me throughout the process. I especially appreciated how he tailored his recommendations to ensure the dog would be a perfect fit for our family, which includes two young children and several other pets.
My main concern was the safety of my children, given the high-drive nature of working dogs like Dutch Shepherds. Erick’s careful matching process put those worries to rest, as he selected a dog that would integrate seamlessly with our family: Nala. Nala’s Training and Preparation
Nala was imported from Germany, a decision that was common among the top companies I researched. European breeding standards often produce healthier and more capable working dogs, and Nala was no exception. Her training covered everything from basic obedience to advanced off-leash work, making her the perfect partner for my lifestyle.
Once I reserved Nala, I was added to a group chat with Erick, his wife Alyssa, and Breton, who would be Nala’s primary trainer. The team kept me updated with regular photos, videos, and progress reports via a shared Dropbox. Nala’s training took approximately 3.5 months, during which time Breton worked closely with her to ensure she met all my specific needs and expectations.
Delivery
The Delivery Experience
Nala’s delivery to our home was an unforgettable experience. Originally scheduled for the week following Thanksgiving, her arrival was delayed by two weeks due to her going into heat. Erick and Breton finally delivered Nala on December 11, 2023, and stayed with us for an entire week to ensure a smooth transition.
During the delivery period, we went through extensive handler education, covering dog training basics, psychology, and practical applications in daily life. We spent a lot of time out and about, putting Nala and me in real-life situations to solidify our bond and her training. The extended delivery time also allowed us to incorporate some fun, including a trip to our family’s farm where we enjoyed shooting, riding ATVs, and even deer hunting together. Post Delivery
Post-Purchase Support and Relationship Maintenance
The support from Coastline K9 didn’t end with Nala’s delivery. Over the past eight months, they have been incredibly responsive to any questions I’ve had, often offering to hop on a call to provide detailed answers. We even returned to Naples for a follow-up training session in March, which was both enjoyable and educational. We were even able to sneak in a Disney Trip on the drive down! Our ongoing relationship with Erick, Breton, and the Coastline K9 team has been invaluable. They continue to provide guidance and support, ensuring that Nala remains the exceptional service dog she was trained to be. The follow-up training sessions have also been a great opportunity to reinforce our bond and refine Nala’s skills.
Reflections on the Experience
Working with Coastline K9 has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Nala is not only an incredible asset but also my best friend and constant companion. The investment in her training was worth every penny, and I would highly recommend Coastline K9 to anyone in search of a service dog. From start to finish, their commitment to excellence has been evident, and I’m grateful for the relationship we’ve built with them.
Nala’s outstanding behavior in public is a testament to the quality of training she received. We receive compliments every time we go out, and people can instantly tell that she’s a “real” service dog. Whether we’re flying, visiting amusement parks, or simply going about our daily routine, Nala is a true professional, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience I’ve had with Coastline K9.
