Service Dog Travel Tips and Memories

Overview

Traveling with a service dog like Nala has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. Whether we’re exploring the snow-covered mountains of Vermont or basking in the sun on a beach in Florida, Nala is always by my side, ready for any adventure. In this post, I’ll share some of our favorite travel memories and offer tips on how to ensure your pet is prepared for new adventures.

Nala’s Memorable Travel Experiences

Park City, Utah, Disney Land, and San Diego, California (February 2024)

Our first big adventure with Nala was an exciting trip that took us from the snowy landscapes of Park City, Utah, to the bustling theme parks of Disneyland in California. This was Nala’s first time flying with us, and I was understandably nervous. Having only had her for two months, I was unsure how she’d handle the journey. But, true to her training and temperament, Nala did exceptionally well. We flew from Atlanta to Salt Lake City, then from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles, and finally from San Diego back to Atlanta.

In Park City, Nala had a blast playing in the snow. The expansive, open spaces gave her the freedom to explore, and she loved every moment of it. Disneyland was another first for both Nala and my family. Navigating a high-traffic theme park with a service dog was a new experience, but Nala handled it with grace. Whether we were walking past the detection dogs at the entrance or enjoying the rides together, she stayed focused and calm. Even when she had to stay with a cast member while I went on more intense rides, Nala received glowing remarks for her behavior.

Stowe Mountain, Vermont (March 2024)

Our trip to Stowe Mountain was another unforgettable experience, primarily because it was my first time traveling alone with Nala. To ensure we both had enough space, I booked us first-class seats, and Nala, as usual, handled the trip like a pro. Stowe Mountain offered beautiful scenery, and though I spent most of my days on the slopes, Nala was a trooper, staying in our room with no issues. The weather was perfect – not too cold, with a hint of early spring warmth. Although we missed a big snowstorm by just a day, the trip was still one for the books.

Naples, Florida, and Disney World (March 2024)

In March 2024, Nala and I embarked on a journey to Naples, Florida, for some refresher training. But before we arrived, we made a pit stop at Disney World. This was my first time at Disney World with Nala, and it was a blast! From riding Tron at Magic Kingdom to Guardians Cosmic Rewind in EPCOT, Nala was there for it all. The refresher training at Coastline K9 was also a success, and it was great to reconnect with Erick, the owner, and meet another Dutch Shepherd named Judo. Our stay at the Naples Grand Beach Resort was the perfect end to a great trip, complete with peaceful walks along the pet-free beach.

Dallas, Texas (May 2024)

In May 2024, Nala and I, along with my oldest daughter, traveled to Dallas, Texas, to visit one of our suppliers, Valtir. The factory tour was an exciting experience, especially seeing how highway guardrail is manufactured. Nala handled the noise and commotion like a champ. We also visited the Fort Worth Zoo, where Nala caught the attention of almost every animal we encountered, especially the big cats. It was an interesting experience seeing how curious the animals were about Nala. This trip also marked my first experience managing Nala during a heat cycle, which thankfully didn’t cause any issues.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (July 4th, 2024)

Out of all our travels, Nala’s favorite trip would have to be our 4th of July getaway to Myrtle Beach. We stayed at a house on the water with a dock and a pool, and Nala couldn’t get enough of the swimming. She spent hours each day playing fetch in the water with her favorite foam ball, and by the end of the trip, she had become completely addicted to water play. It was the perfect way to beat the summer heat, and I think this trip cemented Nala’s love for all things water-related.

Preparing Nala for Travel

Person planning a trip using a smartphone, notebook, and laptop, with a world map on the screen.

Traveling with Nala requires some preparation, but her excellent training and confidence make the process much smoother. Here’s how I prepare Nala for our adventures:

  • Packing Essentials: I always carry a backpack with Nala’s essentials: an extra leash, prong collar, dominant collar, water bowl, Mushers Secret, e-collar accessories, freeze-dried treats, and her beloved foam balls. See more about our go to service dog equipment with my 14 Essential Tools for my Service Dog: A Comprehensive Guide. I don’t usually pack food, as we buy it once we arrive at our destination. Most pet stores carry Impact Raw Dog Food, which Nala eats.
  • Comfort and Stress-Free Travel: Thanks to Nala’s strong obedience and solid environmental training, she remains calm and comfortable during our travels. Whether we’re flying, taking an Uber, or riding a ski lift, Nala’s confidence shines through.
  • Feeding and Bathroom Needs: Nala is trained to use the bathroom on command, which makes travel much easier. To avoid any accidents during flights, I adjust her feeding and drinking schedule 24 hours before takeoff. This predictability allows for a smooth journey.

Travel Tips with a Service Dog

For those planning to travel with their dogs, here are some tips:

  • Stick to a Routine
    • Knowing your dog’s bathroom schedule and maintaining a consistent routine can help reduce stress during travel.
  • Choose Pet-Friendly Destinations
    • While I don’t need to worry about this as much with Nala due to her service dog status, it’s important to ensure that your destination is accommodating to your pet’s needs.
  • Safety First
    • Whether you’re on the road or in a new place, your dog’s safety should always be a priority. Keep an eye out for potential hazards, and always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Exercise and Playtime
    • Ensure your dog gets plenty of exercise before and after travel. Nala and I always have a heavy play session before heading out and once we arrive at our destination.

Reflections on Traveling with Nala

Traveling with Nala has not only enriched our bond but has also given me more confidence in day-to-day activities. The most rewarding part of taking Nala on our travels is the memories we create together. Plus, she’s always up for a great photo op! Nala was already well adapted to travel when she joined our family, and each new adventure helps to reinforce her confidence and adaptability.

One last note: People often mistake Nala for a Belgian Malinois because of their similarities. But rest assured, she’s a Dutch Shepherd through and through!
